What is argan oil?

Argan oil comes from the kernels of the Argania Spinosa tree and is typically produced by hand-pressing the kernels after cracking the shell of the argan fruit. It naturally contains high amounts of antioxidants, fatty acids, and vitamins.

Commonly found in Morocco, people across the region have been using argan oil for centuries because it offers several benefits for hair, skin, nails and overall well-being. It is even referred to as “liquid gold.” Read on to learn more…

The benefits of argan oil:

Here we look at the effects argan oil has on different parts of the body.

Hair

Because it includes fatty acids, this oil is incredibly moisturising. It can nourish the scalp, removing dandruff and irritation and promoting healthy follicles (which cover the hair at the root); it also coats each strand with a layer of protection against drying conditions such as weather, heat, and styling damage. It is particularly well known to protect hair against the sun and one study in particular showed that its vast amounts of antioxidants protect against free radical damage.

Possibly as a cumulative result of all of the above factors, research also shows that using argan oil for hair promotes growth.

Skin

Studies show that argan oil can deeply moisturise and hydrate the skin. This is partly because it includes a high amount of vitamin E which helps to nourish and repair the skin’s natural barrier, improving its ability to retain moisture and leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth.

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties and high amounts of antioxidants, it can also be used to

  • Reduce redness.
  • Heal burns and wounds.
  • Improve the skin’s elasticity and reduce signs of ageing.

Oiling the skin

Nails

Because of its moisturising properties, argan oil can have a transformational effect on the nails and cuticles, helping to prevent drying, cracking and peeling. In strengthening the nails and nourishing the nail bed, it can also support growth.

Body

Argan oil contains essential nutrients such as omega-6 and oleic acid which have been proven to have a number of beneficial effects on overall health and wellbeing. This includes:

  • Supporting heart health.
  • Boosting the immune system.
  • Lowering cholesterol (Bear in mind: this is an area where research has only just begun).

How to use

There are several ways for you to incorporate this powerful oil into your routine…

  • For the hair: Place a few drops in the palm of your hand and massage through your hair before shampooing. You can leave this on for a few hours or just 30 minutes.
  • For the skin: Add a few drops of pure oil to clean, damp skin, rubbing it in with your fingers. You can also add it to your regular moisturiser.
  • For the nails: Massage a drop or two into the ends of your fingers, starting at the nail bed. You can also add a few drops of oil to a bowl and soak your nails for 10-20 minutes.
  • For the body: Choose a product that is 100% argan oil (such as the Nutra Vit oil) and add a few drops to salad or bread for a tasty, but nourishing dressing.
